Reading Autobiography

When I was younger the topic of reading was always a forceful task my parents pushed onto me. I would go to the public library with my father and pick up books that sparked my interest.  I would either start the book's first chapter and never pick it up again or attempt to open it. The reason why I had a dislike for reading was because I struggled, I struggled so much that I was grades behind my academic reading level. My parents paid for tutors, enrolled me in after-school programs, and eventually put me into a program Read 180 which changed my whole perspective of reading. As my reading improved, I started to love to read more and more. The first book that really touched my heart was the book in 9th grade called “The Glass Castle” by Jeanette Walls. This was the first time I found myself picking up a book and actually enjoying it, I never put it down. I began to buy romantic novels at Barnes and Noble but I realized that I was reading so much I didn’t want to waste more money or paper on paperback books. I recently asked my parents for a Kindle and I began to fly by books in two to three days at a time.

The reason why I am majoring in Special Education English at Manhattanville College is not only because I love reading and I am interested in it. I want to help students who were like me, who hated reading simply because they found it difficult or because they could not. I want to make an impact on my students and I want them to enjoy reading as much as I do now and I know eventually in their lifetime they will.
